My thoughts on rescue V.S. breeders.
Breeders.....
There are good breeders and bad breeders. There are breeders trying to keep that breed going and the ones who want to make a lot of money fast. I believe that if a dog is born then it needs a home. I like to rescue and limit the breeding. But however, if it's to keep the breed going we do need a few people to do this for us, just not as many! I also think there should be a limited to certain amount of breeders per breed per state and very highly watched over with strict rules and regulations.
I have both rescued and purchased a dog. This depends on your situation and the dogs. If a dog lands in my path then I am meant to have that one I go by my intuition and I take it! Sometimes it's not always a rescue situation. But I will always know if that is the dog I am suppose to have by the way it enters my life.
I hope one day there will be more rules on breeding dogs. One breeder per breed with rules would help prevent over breeding and prevent too many homeless dogs. Educating people on not giving up their dogs for stupid reasons is really most of the problem. ( I would live in a tent before I gave up any dog I own) I personally would do anything in my power never to give up a dogs no matter the situation.
There are some exceptions. If you are going into a nursing home or know that you are going to pass away soon. Thats about the only 2 reasons I agree with. Moving or having kids is not a good enough reason to me. That dog should be treated as a member of the family and should move with you! And should learn to adapt to the kids and v.s. if it's training the dog needs then get training. There is no good excuse.
If you do your homework before you get your dog then you should know what you are getting and would never be giving it up. You couldn't pay me a million dollars to give up any dog I own. Its my responsibility to make sure my dogs get the training, love and socializing they need. I see a lot of rescue dogs that are not friendly. Its because of their past and if you can't fix this problem with your rescue dog then don't bring them to the dog parks please! That is for dogs that are socialized..... Not for dogs that aren't! It's not the place to get them socialized at our dogs expense.
Also be careful rescuing a dog you don't know. Research the breed first. Especially If you have a dog business and subject your clients to a dog with aggression issues you could have problems. The breed may not fit your household style. Do your homework on breeds. Some dogs are herding dogs. Those do not belong in a house with lots of dogs. They will herd them and some dogs don't like that! Some breeds are escape artist. The list goes on. If you research it out first you will be less likely to give up your pet. So sometimes it's not the breeders its the people.
I also don't believe in rescue dogs if you do not have a fence unless you raise it from a puppy or get an electric fence! You could be setting up the dog and your neighborhood for problems. Especially if you have people that walk their dogs by everyday. I hate to see a rescue that doesn't know better go out and get into a fight and then get put to sleep. It would be the owner's fault in this case. Some have been through things that you don't know about and may react to certain things in certain ways that you may not see coming. So be careful.
I do not have a fence and live on a corner so I will not subject any rescue to such temptation. I have to raise my dog from puppies where I live because they are surrounded by temptation on my corner. I teach them to resist it all! That includes ignoring the deer, dogs and people passing by all day. Not easy but I spend a lot of time training from a puppy.
If breeders don't breed pure breads there would be no more of that breed . But I do believe it should all be a limit with rules and restrictions. If someone has their heart set on a breed then they should be able to have that breed.
If someone has their heart set on a puppy then they should have a puppy. This way they are not giving up the dog later because they rescued a dog not suited for their life style. People need different breeds for different situations. A hunter needs a hunting dog, a family needs a family dog, a older person needs a calm dog and the list goes on. That is why we need certain breeds for certain people....
If these rules would take place then no one would would feel guilty about not rescuing because there would be no more over breeding and homeless dogs to rescue. And they won't be picking a breed that is not right for them.
The good thing about a good breeder is this...
A good breeder would sign a form saying that if a person isn't taking good care of the dog or has to give them up then they get the dog back and will foster it until they find it another home. The breeder should also analyze all people getting their dogs to make sure they are the right fit for this breed. They should also do extreme back ground checks, call references, and check in on the dog during the first year. These are the things that need to start happening.! Let's hope the world gets smart on the rules of over breeding and we crack down on it all soon! It's more of the people that we need to educate. The ones that just go rescue a breed that is not a good fit for them then it ends up at a rescue and becomes unbalanced, and feeling unloved then is hard to adopt out!
Pet Store Dogs...
The sad thing about these dogs is no one wants to rescue them because it's supporting the puppy mills. This is sad but true. The problem is these puppies are in the cages at pet stores every day all day praying for a home. They need rescuing too! They are just as in need as a dog at a rescue. They will eventually end up at a rescue anyways and by then it will be very unbalanced. This is why we need to get to the root of the problem and shut down the puppy mills and not make the dogs coming from them suffer for it by leaving them there!!!!! Not taking them is not stopping the puppy mills. They will find other ways. So the way to fix it is HUNT THEM DOWN AND SHUT THEM DOWN!!!
I get very upset when someones says "omg you got that dog from a pet store"!!! Yes they did and guess what this was rescuing!!!! They will end up dead soon if not rescued and it's not their fault they were born into a puppy mill life!!!! Don't take it out on them.. As long as their is no law on pet stores selling dogs then guess what? they need homes!!! If you want to stop puppy mill this is not the way to do it!
CHANGE THE LAWS ON PET STORES SELLING DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's not the dogs fault it's ours for allowing pet stores to have pets on display like toys!! lets get to the root of the problem not the tip of the iceberg. SO instead of leaving the dog in the cage at the pet store to die spend time on changing the law for pet stores to stop selling puppies and to stop puppy mills.
